This Saturday my boyfriend Ben, his best friend Andy and I hosted a group show/zine launch and dance party at Studio 561 at Bathurst and Bloor. I had the pleasure of getting to know our two promoters from Artistic Anarchy - Soo and Yoshi. They did an awesome job and our show was a big success. We're looking to do one every few months so the next one will be around the new year! We are so happy with how everything went, so thank you all for coming out and supporting us!

Sorry for the terrible photograph, and as far as apologies go - sorry for being out of the loop for SO LONG! I'm happy about this sketch I did the other day, it's from no references and I've been working on profile views.

I'm now living in Toronto, working at Gap in Yorkville and Midoco arts and office supplies on Bloor. I am without a scanner now so I'm going to be aiming to purchase a new imac and scanner in the near future (since my 2005 macbook is dying). I hope to have lots more posted before August... I have a show that month!

Since I have not being doing much productive work lately, I've decided to dip my toes back into design work, starting with a collection of Ray Ban advertisements. You might be wondering how I randomly selected Ray Ban? Well, every portrait I've done in the last year has been basically of someone wearing wayfarers. So here it is. This is 2009 Illustration Grad, Rachelle Letain. Her work is fabulous and she's not only a darling, but she's also probably one of the most beautiful girls I've ever come across. Well, today was the day I bit the bullet and was persuaded to try digital painting. My dear friend, Michael was kind enough to show me some of the low ropes and let me use his gigantic tablet. This is obviously not a finished piece of work, I'd like to complete the sperm whale in the back there. I was pretty impressed with Photoshop CS4's brush capabilities! A wonderful personal accomplishment for me, anyway. :)

I've recently learned about these figures called Kachina dolls. Over the holidays I was watching an antique show and was fascinated with these 2 native dolls a woman was trying to get rid of (for the sake that they frightened her). Turns out these 'Kachina' dolls can be worth up to $5000! Of course, the value of them doesn't interest me so much as the stories behind each one.

I was antique shopping in Cambridge over the weekend and found about 5 of these dolls for sale. I'm saddened to say I could not afford them. Anyhow here are some images. They are so neat!

Bag for Business Project

Here's the images for my business class prototype: the In-Sight custom reflective bag. I'm kind of bummed I did this on my most expensive Chrome bag, but it turned out okay! Well... it's reflective anyhow. I was originally looking for 3M reflective fabric ink but couldn't locate it anywhere. So I had to use metallic acrylic, night-glo fabric ink and a reflective aerosol spray by rust-oleum. The fact that I had to use 3 supplies instead of one made the end result a bit sub par. The aerosol was very difficult to control.

But! Now I'm safer since all my cycling apparel seems to be black... including my bike. This bag should go great with my reflective 3M velocity deep v rims!

Sketchbook Final Piece

I think Goya's black paintings subconsciously influenced me on this one. I love it. I haven't gotten much feedback but we essentially had to create a final piece which reflected our sketchbook work over the course of this semester. This is what mine seemed to evolve into.

I went to bed at 5 30 this morning and came to school at 8.

Many and many a year ago, two Micmac warriors from rival villages got into a terrible argument. Harsh words were exchanged, and then knives were pulled. The warriors battled back and forth on the banks of a small creek. They fought with the ferocity of grizzlies, tearing at each other with their knives, ripping at each other's clothes and hair.

I had a very crazy and fun weekend...

Marie and I went to see Two Hours Traffic (good feel East Coast!)

at the Horseshoe on Saturday. Had a super fun time!

Earlier my boyfriend and I attended a schoolyard sprints event for T.O. cyclists. Unfortunately one of the participants in the final race took a major fall. I really hope Andy's alright. Poor guy hit his head and broke a vertebrae and his collar bone. I'm thankful that's the extent of injuries. Always wear your helmet, especially during races!

'The Subconscious Sketchbook'

This is one part of my spread from today's elective class: 'The Subconscious Sketchbook'... which sounded a bit like bullshit but it's all about progressing in a fun and creative manor and not holding sketchbooks up on a pedestal and worrying about each stroke you lay down. We drew for an hour and a half in the cafeteria today and this was spontaneous and fun! I really am excited on the unfolding of this class. :)

Tomorrow I need to present my thesis to Marco. He's asked us to show him some of our favourite illustrators and explain why they inspire us.

These illustrators emulate how I want to narrate unnervingly beautiful dreams that I've had.
